Week 1

Tuesday May 7th 2024

Good morning you all, I’m sitting here in  coffee shop writing this and recapping the

past week.. I am learning I am not the best writer, haha I'm sure you’ve noticed if you read about my journey up here! I enjoy writing but when it comes to writing for others to read it is a stretch forsure.

This is my week off, we got off on monday morning at 9.. Which our schedules up here are 1 week on 1 week off. We have 2 shifts and on my shift there 4 people with me and B shift has 5 providers.

This past week (which we started on wednesday) was mostly orientation, had 4 calls, which I was only on 1, was a dehydrated patient that was in rough condition.. EMS is very similar here as it is in Pennsylvania besides the protocols.  We have like 2 hour transports on way and thats Fairbanks memorial hospital which is basically the only hospital we transport to  or on occasion if it is very minor there is a clinic in the canyon that we can transport to.. May is definitely still the shoulder season so I don't expect it to get to busy till probably June, and most of the tourist things are still closed so far.

This weeks orientation consisted of getting to know the area, they don’t have addresses everywhere yet, thats a new thing which i think only changed last summer, so most of the calls get called out by mile markers or plots! So thats fun.

We also stocked the old van ambulance which will be 3rd due this summer. And getting used to a new charting system and CAD system obviously.

Tuesday evenings we have training and once a month is EMS, which we have 2 this month but we had a doctor from the Netherlands come and share, he is staffing the medical dts at the YWAM base here, so he came and shared on diabetes, hyperkalemia, and electrolyte imbalances. That was pretty interesting, apparently their EMS systems are pretty different there so he was very interested in what we get to do..

We each have our own room in the cabins that are in the back of the station and they are very cozy and cute, they are pretty small so it didn’t take to long to settle into it, we are also working on building a patio outside the cabins so thats been fun to get to work outside, its still gets cold in the evenings but thru the days its been 50 degrees, well except for yesterday it was snowing and like 30 degrees, snowed like 2 inches..

2 of my co workers and I drove to fairbanks yesterday and did some grocery shopping, which its fairly cheaper in fairbanks than healy but then with the driving and gas I don’t know if it even saves that much..

I met some people from the town and are involved with the YWAM base so they invited me over for dinner and the worship night so I’m excited to get plugged into a good community here!

Hoping to drive into the park this week and do some hiking! I’m excited to explore the endless places here… the mountains are all around and are all so breathtaking.. still in awe I get to spend the summer here.. it’s is so so pretty!
